the summer, a retrospective.
smelling summer: one night in june, jocelin and i went to edward's friend's house and he pumped up my bicycle tires. we biked to the people's food co-op right next to jocelin's apartment and enjoyed dinner together. we both bought fizzy ginger beers to drink. after finishing dinner, we went on a big loop of the neighborhood and as we were coming down north thayer street we smelled summer right then. this was taken about fourty seconds after.
jersey sheets: during the school year, seth would visit me in massachusetts and always comment on how soft my sheets were. finally, when i first got to michigan in the summer, we went to meijer and bought jersey sheets for his bed too. we bought blue ones and red ones. these are the red ones. this picture was taken around eleven in the morning, when i woke up. seth left early for work he would come kiss me goodbye, i would never open my eyes but i remember his cold cheeks. i always liked the lines of light his blinds make.
the hoffmans': after getting my heart broken, i returned home to dc. i was greeted with a shoebox of candy, birthday cards, pictures, and a girls night on the playground near dani's house. we sat there in the dark and i told them everything. i don't remember much from this half of the summer, it's a blur of heartbreak, alcohol, and friends. this picture was taken at rod, matt and andrew hoffman's house on july 21, two weeks exactly after i came home. the hoffmans' house is beautiful.
grandfather and hannah: at the end of the summer, my uncle peter along with his two children from colorado came to visit. i had met the eldest, abe, once before but he was very much still at the baby-blob stage. i had never even met hannah. i remember when i was young and my cousins kat and jay (both in their 30s now) would hang out with me and i got that same feeling as i was getting to know hannah and abe. by the time they are 20, i will be around 35. strange. at the time this picture was taken, my mom was cooking dinner (rosemary and red wine vinegar chicken, i think). my grandfather was over also, holding hannah. grandfather and uncle mike moved to colorado a month ago. he said: i got to watch you, sarah, annie, and mary grow up and now it's time to watch the colorado cousins do the same.
